HOME THE PLAYS LINKS CONTACTS THE JUDGES
Background to our project
Last year Slough Writers turned their attention to Slough as a subject for their writing. The writers'group have a series of internal competitions every year and to finish 2008 they decided to invite members to write plays initially suitable for radio.

The idea of having Slough as a theme came from Duncan McLarty Assistant Editor at BBC Radio Berkshire who brought in playwright Mike Walker to share the task of judging the entries.

The result was eight plays reflecting Slough in surprising and sometimes shocking ways. All the plays have been offered to organisations in and around Slough via this web site.

HOME NEEDED
for SLOUGH PLAYS

The readings at Waterstones in Slough by Total Theatre proved what an entertaining set of plays these are. And demonstrated that the format of readings is ideal for small venues. We want to find more intimate venues for this hour long show. Slough is the theme and we reveal the drama and comedy behind the bricks and mortar.
SUCCESS AT WATERSTONES
THE AUDIENCE AT WATERSTONES THE CAST WITH TOM TOTAL IN PERFORMANCE
At the end of September, four plays were read at Waterstones bookshop in Slough. The Train Now Standing, SLOG, The Tringham Trail and The Mayor and the Monkey made up the one-hour show. A recoding on DVD is available. Audience enjoyment was not curtailed by a lack of scenery and props. Full attention could be focussed on the quality of the acting, the drama and the comedy.

SLOG PERFORMED at the WEST WING
West Wing Rep, the resident theatre group at Slough’s West Wing Arts Centre produced SLOG by Lee Taylor as a ‘short’ to accompany their main production of Bouncers in July 2009. SLOG offers an explanation of why Slough was missing from Russian maps of the UK during the cold war.

SLOUGH MUSEUM and THE KING'S ASTRONOMER
The King’s Astronomer by Wally Smith was the first of the eight plays to be put to use in the borough of Slough. Slough Museum used a recording of Wally’s fifteen minute play about William Herschel as an important part of their exhibition on the famous astronomer who discovered the planet Uranus.

GIVE A PLAY A HOME
Slough Writers are offering the plays to the people of Slough so that they may be used to celebrate the history and vibrancy of the Town. Some of the plays have themes that relate only to Slough and some use the town as a setting to explore other ideas. But all the plays could be mixed and matched to fit any venue or event in the Slough calendar. Please have a look at the plays.
